Lionel Messi has shown the first red card of Barcelona career
Lionel Messi was sent off with few minutes left to play as Athletic Club sink Barcelona to win Super Copa on Sunday night.
It was the first red card of his Barcelona career which summed up his frustration at the Camp Nou club.
Near the end of the Spanish Super Cup final, Messi played a pass and took a swing at Asier Villalibre as the Athletic forward ran across his path.
The referee missed the incident at first but upon a VAR review, he showed Messi a straight red card for violent conduct.
Barcelona was 2-1 up at some point with Antoine Griezmann scoring the goals, but Villalibre’s equalizer forced extra-time.
Inaki Williams then scored a fabulous winning goal early in stoppage time, but the game will be best remembered for the first red card Messi has ever received in his 753 matches for Barcelona.
Messi will now be banned only for Super Cup games should the Spanish FA decide not to add more matches to the automatic three-game ban he will receive for violent conduct.
That means the Argentine is set to be eligible for Barca’s upcoming matches, which include a Copa del Rey tie against Cornella on Thursday and a La Liga match against Elche on Sunday.
