Messi finally claims international glory

Argentina won the Copa America 2021 after a 28 years drought, last Saturday as Lionel Messi regard by many as the greatest soccer player of all time, claimed his first international medal.

Starting for just the second time in the competition, Angel Di Maria scribbled his name down in the history books by giving Argentina the lead, midway through the first half. A goal which would later decided the which way the highly coveted price would go.

Brazil came on strong in an exciting second half, but even with five strikers on the field, they could not get an equalizer against an Argentine defence lead by Rodrigo De Paul.

It could have been a better night for the Argentine side, but the golden boy Messi, who was quiet throughout the game at the Maracana stadium, threw away a golden opportunity, with just two minutes to round up the game.

Argentina’s win was a particular triumph for Lionel Messi, who picked up his first international title with Argentina, after dominating the footballing stage for more than a decade with an intimidating number of club and individual honors.

Messi finished as the tournament’s top goalscorer with four goals and was elected joint best player along with Neymar.
