Was Thanos Right Though?

The fact that the question is an ongoing debate, shows the depth of the characters in the MCU. Once upon a time, superhero movies were a classic tale of good versus pure unreasonable evil (think of the Joker).

However, the super villain of the Avengers franchise, Thanos, is a complex character who illustrates the depth of modern superhero movies.

The Mad Titan, explains why he is so hell bent on slaughtering half the universe. He has seen what overpopulation does to a planet first hand. It destroyed his home world Titan, and though it was easy for us to disagree with his reasoning, it wasn’t hard, to at least understand the motivations behind his convictions, at least.

The debate, however became a thing, after the events of the Etarnals. After Eternals, some fans have argued that Thanos did nothing wrong. Because Ajak (Salma Hayek), revealed that the snap in Avengers: Infinity War actually delayed the Emergence, meaning it gave humanity five more years to exist.

Some fans even believe that line was Marvel Studios’ attempt to vindicate the villain’s actions. There is even an idea that since Thanos was an Eternal, he somehow knew about the Celestials’ plans, and decreasing the population in the universe was his way of preventing any Emergence.

But was Thanos Right Though? (Because we don’t think so)

  1. First, all genocide is wrong. No matter the motivations. Somethings are that simple!
  2. As Ajak revealed, the Thanos snap only gave humanity five more years to exist. So the snap, technically dint solve anything. Even if he knew about the emergence. Would he have returned after five years and blip-ed away half the human population to save us again? And Again? and Again? It makes no sense
  3. Third, removing half the population of any system randomly, could be catastrophic to that system. Assuming that randomness increased the number of people with certain defects? Or removed all, or too many of ‘a certain number of people’ with necessary skills? like say Doctors?
  4. At the core of Thanos’s believe is that all things should be balanced. “Perfectly balanced… as all things should be”. Which means he doesn’t believe in progress. “Imbalance” is what leads to expansion. We improve as a specie because there is a need for more!
  5. Finally, saying “Thanos is right,” is like saying earth quakes are good, and a viable solution to the problems caused by overpopulation! The Mad Titan is a mass murderer who means to kill trillions and that makes him “evil,” even if he is our favorite super villain of all time.
